The Maturity Matrix
We use a simple maturity model, shown above, to assess how your IT team sits within the wider business.
Crudely, is goes like this:
Survivor - we really hope that you are not here, this is a world of pain, making it up as you are going along, high reliance on heroics and luck.
Controller - the default position for a lot of IT teams a few years ago, hiding behind an impenetrable help desk prevents overall IT meltdown and keeps the basic wheels turning.
Servant - IT steps up, starts to work with the business to deliver to set standards. This is, effectively, where many excellent IT teams are today.
Partner - The IT and business love affair is underway, levels of trust have been established and joint projects aimed at creating business value abound..
Enabler - The gap between IT and the business is now wafer thin, the business is now digitally optimised, there are no longer ‘IT’ projects or ‘business’ projects as all parties are paddling in the same direction and with the same purpose.
Let’s look at some of the reasons for transition between the states of our model:
Survivor to Controller
Bad things happened, very bad. So, structure and rigour are put into place to provide stability.
Controller to Servant
The business has piled a lot of money (it thinks its a lot but it's generally not) into IT and need to see a return. This makes the IT function step up a gear to it now works to demonstrate value for money in terms of the service it provides.
Servant to Partner
This is the important moment where the business sees that competitive advantage through better data and streamlined processes can be achieved through IT. Maybe they have seen competitors leap ahead of them, powered by super slick IT or, perhaps, they see the opportunity to move ahead themselves.
Partner to Enabler
Instigator: Realization (or fear?)
This is a point of no-return. The whole concept of IT as a separate function dissolves as the business moves to complete digital transformation of its business operation.
Far fetched? Not realistic? It's happening, banks and other large organisations now run business projects with integrated multi functional teams.

From those interactions we craft a program that we use to work with IT teams, the goals of the program are to enable them to create a structured model of the business and its people and to enable them to work with their business colleagues with business goals, rather than technology goals, at the forefront of the conversation.
Our programs are quick-fire, direct and get everyone involved with lots of collaboration and group work.
We will take your teams through 3 workshops, each workshop will take between 4 and 6 hours depending on the numbers taking part. Ideally we like to work with between 4 and 8 people in a session.
